diy: clay jewelry dish

The kids and I have been running through the crafts during this quarantine but I really wanted to start enlisting their help on cute projects that I wasn’t going to just want to throw away in a few days (all these cardboard projects we made that are lying around everywhere are driving me nuts haha!). These jewelry dishes are going to look so cute on my bedside table!

All of these products can be ordered on amazon also or found online with Target curb pickup so you should be good to source these while at home. Happy making!

how to make:

I laid my parchment paper sheets on top of my counter to create a clean workspace, and worked and kneaded the clay for a while with clean hands to make the clay warm, smooth and workable. I made it into a ball and placed it between two sheets of parchment paper and placed a cutting board on top and pressed down to flatten as much I could just to start the process of pressing the clay flat. Then I rolled it until about 1/2 inch thickness being careful not to press into the clay with my fingers because I wanted to keep the clay smooth.

I used a round plate that was a little larger than what I wanted my final jewelry plate to be as my template and cut a circle out of my rolled clay. I rolled the edges of my freshly cut circle under to create a lip surrounding my plate. If you need help with this step you can check out my IGTV video on my instagram titled: “diy clay jewelry dish”. Once I got the desired shape down, I dipped my fingers in water and smoothed any cracks or dents as best I could.

The kids helped me roll out facial expressions and I pressed them gently onto the plate making sure to blend the edges with wet fingertips until they secured to the plate. Let your final jewelry dishes dry for 1-3 days (depending on size) on parchment paper, and check each day to see if the clay has completely dried through before use. If you want to seal or paint your dish once its dry you can using acrylic paint!

Hope you enjoy, be sure to tag @amberthrane on instagram if you make these so I can see/share your projects!
